Rolex has brought back the Padellone name for a watch that is technically far more ambitious than a simple vintage revival. The original nickname belongs to reference 8171, but the new Perpetual Padellone is built around calibre 7190 and an instantaneous complete annual calendar. At midnight, its date, day and month indications change together instead of creeping through a long transition.
What the annual calendar actually does
The Haplos system distinguishes between 30- and 31-day months, so the calendar needs manual correction only once a year, at the end of February. Rolex displays the date with a peripheral hand, the weekday through an aperture at 9 o’clock and the month at 3 o’clock. The moonphase at 6 o’clock uses meteorite for the full and new moon elements and follows a 29.53-day cycle.
Calibre 7190 is the real story
The 5 Hz movement is visible through a transparent caseback and carries Rolex’s Dynapulse escapement, Syloxi hairspring and a 66-hour power reserve. Rolex says the watch generated 30 patent applications, including two exclusive to this model. Those numbers matter less as marketing than as evidence that the calendar layout and its instantaneous switching were engineered as a system, not added to an existing dress-watch calibre.
A dress Rolex with clear limits
The 39 mm case comes in Everose gold or 950 platinum and is water-resistant to 50 metres. Everose versions are offered on the seven-link Settimo bracelet or brown alligator leather, while the platinum model comes on black alligator. This is not a sporty all-purpose Rolex. Its appeal lies in compact precious-metal proportions, a legible calendar and the chance to see an unusually technical movement.
Who should care
Collectors drawn to reference 8171 will recognize the name and the complete-calendar idea, but the new watch should be judged on its own architecture. The strongest reason to want it is not nostalgia; it is the combination of an instantaneous annual calendar, a high-frequency movement and an unusually restrained 39 mm case. Buyers who mainly want everyday robustness will find more practical Rolex choices elsewhere.
The point of the Padellone
The Perpetual Padellone is convincing because Rolex lets the complication define the watch. The dial explains the calendar, the case keeps it wearable and the transparent back gives calibre 7190 equal billing. It is a formal watch with a mechanical argument, rather than a familiar model carrying a decorative moonphase.
