The New OMEGA Speedmaster 38 Has One Clear Purist Choice

OMEGA has redrawn the Speedmaster 38 mm around a clearer question: how much Moonwatch character can fit into a smaller automatic chronograph without turning it into a miniature replica? Seven new references bring round subdials, less dial text, thicker bezels with a Dot-Over-Ninety scale and five-link Moonwatch-style bracelets. The most important difference, however, is hidden in the black model. It is the only no-date watch in the group and the only one powered by Calibre 3332.

The Redesign Is More Than A Colour Update

The previous Speedmaster 38 had an identity of its own, including oval subdials and a softer visual character. OMEGA has now made the three counters round, reduced the wording on the dial and restored a thicker tachymeter bezel. Those changes pull the watch closer to the visual grammar of the Moonwatch without changing the proposition that made the line useful: a self-winding chronograph in a 38 mm case.

The five-link bracelet reinforces that shift. Depending on the reference, the centre links are polished or brushed, but the overall architecture now reads as part of the wider Speedmaster family rather than a separate dress-chronograph branch.

The Black No-Date Model Is The Purist Choice

The black steel reference is the closest to the familiar Moonwatch formula. It combines a matt black dial, black aluminium bezel, white luminous hands and indexes, and a bracelet with three brushed rows framed by smaller polished links. More importantly, it removes the date window. Calibre 3332 is reserved for this model, while Calibre 3330 powers the six date-equipped references.

That makes the black watch more than the safest colour. It is the only version where the cleaner dial and the Moonwatch references align mechanically as well as visually. Collectors who dislike date windows on chronographs have a straightforward answer; buyers who use the date every day should not let the heritage argument make the decision for them.

The Other Six Are Not Lesser Versions

The date models give the collection its range. Steel choices include a white dial with blue ceramic bezel and a silvery dial with warm grey aluminium. Two bicolour watches use either Moonshine Gold with green or Sedna Gold with brown and ivory. The remaining pair adds 52 diamonds, totalling 1.53 carats, around ice-blue or mother-of-pearl dials.

Those versions answer a different buying need. A smaller chronograph does not have to look restrained or historically strict. The bicolour and diamond-set pieces use the compact case as a base for colour and jewellery detail, while the steel white and silver models sit between the black purist reference and the more decorative end of the range.

What A 38 mm Speedmaster Now Means

This update matters because it does not treat smaller sizing as a reduced specification. OMEGA has instead sharpened the family resemblance and then widened the aesthetic choices. The 38 mm case is the constant; the buyer chooses between no-date clarity, daily date utility, precious-metal contrast or a diamond-set bezel.

The black model will attract the strongest heritage argument, but it should not automatically win. The better choice is the one that explains why the buyer wanted a 38 mm Speedmaster in the first place. If the answer is compact Moonwatch character, choose black. If the answer is a smaller automatic chronograph with more colour or polish than the Moonwatch offers, the six date models are the point of the collection.
