Seiko Astron Nexter is taking a quieter route into high-function travel watches this autumn. The HAB007J and HAB008J introduce the brand’s first grey-ceramic application, placing the material on the bezel, centre links and crown top. The collector story is not simply that Astron has a new colour. It is that GPS Solar complexity is being given a more restrained material frame.
The Collector’s Short Answer
The new Astron matters because it treats ceramic as a design instrument rather than a luxury signal. The 5X83 calibre brings 38 time zones and automatic correction, but the 43.2 mm by 49.5 mm case makes wrist scale the decisive buying question.
What Grey Ceramic Changes
Seiko describes this as its first use of grey ceramic. HAB007J pairs it with white-silver metal accents, while HAB008J combines a black case, grey ceramic and metallic blue details. Both use a striped grey dial and matching grooves around the bezel, giving the material change a coherent visual rhythm instead of treating it as a surface swap.
The 5X83 Collector Logic
Both references use Seiko’s 5X83 GPS Solar calibre. According to Seiko’s technical data, accuracy is an average monthly deviation of ±15 seconds without reception; a full charge gives approximately six months of operation, or about two years in power-save mode. World time covers 38 time zones, with daylight-saving support and a dual-time display. For a traveller, that is a practical chain of functions rather than a complication list.
The calibre also adds a 1/20-second, 12-hour chronograph, perpetual calendar and automatic hand-position correction. Its collector interest is straightforward: GPS Solar reduces daily setting friction while making its non-mechanical solution technically legible on the dial and in the ownership story.
The Real Boundary Is Case Scale
Both watches measure 43.2 mm wide, 49.5 mm long and 13.4 mm thick. Titanium keeps the weight to 123 grams, but the long case will still announce itself on a smaller wrist. Sapphire crystal and 10-bar water resistance support daily use; they do not remove the need to measure before buying.
HAB007J Or HAB008J?
At 330,000 yen, HAB007J is the quieter option, using open titanium and white-silver accents. HAB008J is 352,000 yen and buys the more assertive black-case and blue-accent treatment. The movement, dimensions, crystal, water resistance and core functions are shared. The meaningful difference is how each one sits beside the rest of a collection, and how marks will read against the darker surface.
Measure Before The Material Wins
These Astrons deserve to be read as a refined surface for GPS Solar’s dense technical identity, not as ceramic for its own sake. The question for a collector is whether the 49.5 mm length works on the wrist before the new material makes the decision feel inevitable. If it does, HAB007J is the more balanced choice and HAB008J the more characterful one. If it does not, the ceramic cannot rescue the fit.
