Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled the Calibre 101 Chain on 13 October 2026, but its most useful detail is not the diamond count. The design team began with the bangle, gem-setting and ornament, then integrated the case and movement at the end. That reverses the usual watch-led process and explains why reference Q2842270 reads as one sculptural object rather than a small dial attached to a bracelet.

The 30-second collector read

This is a high-jewellery piece built around a historically important movement, not a miniature watch made decorative after the fact. The 18K pink-gold bangle alternates 158 brilliant-cut diamonds with 36 glossy black HyCeram cavities. Buy into the design only if the fixed 160–165 mm wrist size works and the discreet hours-and-minutes display suits the wearer; its engineering does not make it a conventional daily watch.

The bangle is the architecture; the dial is deliberately secondary.

Why Calibre 101 still matters

Introduced in 1929 from the two-level Duoplan architecture, Calibre 101 remains the world’s smallest rectangular manually wound mechanical movement, according to the manufacture. The current fifth generation keeps the 14 by 4.8 by 3.4 mm architecture, now uses 98 parts and takes about 40 hours to assemble. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers 33 hours of reserve. The achievement is repeatable production at microscopic scale, not a record frozen in a museum.

Gold, ceramic composite and diamonds share one surface

Each pink-gold bangle is cast in a mould made for that individual watch. After the 36 cavities are finished and the diamond openings drilled, liquid HyCeram is injected, cured under controlled pressure and heat, and polished. A master setter then places 158 diamonds totalling approximately 2.73 carats. The result depends on crisp boundaries between materials; detailed inspection of edges, setting and polish matters more than a headline carat figure.

What to verify before buying

The case measures 18.60 by 5.98 by 6.75 mm, houses a black lacquer dial and is integrated into a bangle sized for a 160–165 mm wrist. Confirm physical fit, clasp security, service access for Calibre 101, warranty, and how the HyCeram and polished gold should be maintained. Jaeger-LeCoultre has not published a price or production total in the cited release, so scarcity and investment claims would be guesswork. The honest appeal is narrower and stronger: a bracelet conceived as the watch itself.
