Seiko’s new Presage Classic Series x Tradman’s Bonsai HCC009J1 is not just another green-dial Presage. The collector hook is more specific: a 38 mm gold-PVD Classic Series case, a bark-like matsuba-iro dial, and a collaboration with Tradman’s Bonsai that makes the watch feel rooted in a Japanese visual culture rather than in a seasonal color trend.

The watch is limited to 2,000 pieces, priced at €1,400 on Seiko’s European boutique site, and listed for delivery from September 2026. That puts it in the familiar modern Presage zone, but the all-gold case and bracelet make the decision more polarizing than a normal steel Classic Series release.

What Launched

The HCC009J1 uses the compact Presage Classic Series formula: 38.0 mm diameter, 12.89 mm thickness, 20 mm lug width, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, a transparent caseback, and 10 bar water resistance. The case and bracelet are stainless steel with gold-coloured coating, while the bracelet uses a double folding clasp.

Inside is Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R51, a time-only movement with hacking seconds, manual winding, and a stated 72-hour power reserve. The absence of a date matters here because the dial is the reason the watch exists.

The Bonsai Idea

Seiko says the design is inspired by a Japanese black pine bonsai glowing in moonlight. Tradman’s Bonsai brings the cultural frame: pine as an evergreen symbol of endurance, the moon as the Yin side of Yin-Yang, and S-shaped forms borrowed from ancient pine bark and growth patterns.

The result is a dial in matsuba green, a traditional colour associated with good fortune. That story matters because Presage is strongest when it does not simply borrow a craft reference as decoration. Here, the texture, colour and warm metal tone all serve the same visual argument.

Why Collectors Should Care

The interesting tension is the gold PVD. Some collectors will reject it immediately because it is not precious metal. Others will see the point: the warm case is the moonlight around the pine, and it gives the green dial the contrast it needs. In steel, this might have been easier to wear; in gold colour, it is more memorable.

That makes the HCC009J1 a useful Presage release to watch. It is not about technical novelty. It is about whether Seiko can keep turning accessible mechanical watches into culturally specific objects without making them feel costume-like.

The HCC009J1 will not be for every Presage buyer, and that is part of its appeal. The gold-PVD bracelet is a commitment, but the dial gives the watch a genuine reason to exist. For collectors who follow Seiko’s craft-led Presage line, this is stronger than a routine colour update because the bonsai reference changes the whole personality of the watch.

If the price feels high for coated steel, that criticism is fair. But as a limited Presage with a clear cultural hook, a compact case, and one of Seiko’s more expressive recent dials, it has enough identity to stand apart from the crowded green-watch field.
