Union Glashütte has made its 2026 Sachsen Classic edition feel more assertive by moving the idea onto the Averin Chronograph. The new Averin Chronograph Limited Edition Sachsen Classic 2026 is not just another rally-logo watch. It takes the brand's square chronograph, gives it a white, grey and signal-red dial treatment, and limits the run to 350 individually numbered pieces.
The official product page confirms the essentials: reference D015.527.17.011.09, a 41 x 41 mm stainless steel case, a white dial with red and grey accents, the automatic UNG-27.S2 chronograph movement, at least 65 hours of power reserve, a silicon balance spring, 100 metres of water resistance and a retail price of EUR 3,700. For a watch tied to a classic-car rally, the technical package is not the most radical part. The more interesting move is how directly Union lets the Averin's geometry carry the motorsport theme.
What launched
The Sachsen Classic has become a recurring platform for Union Glashütte, but this edition feels visually stronger than a conservative vintage chronograph would. The Averin case already has a dashboard-like personality: square, broad-shouldered and deliberately different from round motorsport chronographs. The 2026 edition leans into that with a tile-textured white dial, red chronograph seconds hand, grey blocks and subdials that read like instrument clusters.
Union says the color story points toward racing cars from the 1970s and 1980s. That matters because the watch does not depend on a literal car badge or a heavy event inscription. It uses proportion, color and dial architecture to make the link. The result is cleaner, and more useful for someone who wants the car-watch energy without making the watch feel like a souvenir.
Specs and wearability
The case measures 41 mm wide, 49.47 mm in case length and 15.5 mm thick, with a domed sapphire crystal and a sapphire display back. Those numbers tell us this is not trying to be a small, discreet chronograph. It is a modern square sports watch with wrist presence. The upside is that the shape is part of the point; if Union had used a safer round case, the Sachsen Classic edition would have lost much of its punch.
Inside, the UNG-27.S2 is a cam-operated automatic chronograph with small seconds, date, 30-minute counter, stop-seconds and a 4 Hz beat rate. The silicon balance spring and 65-hour minimum reserve are the practical spec anchors. Union includes both a red rubber strap and a grey perforated leather strap with red lining, each with a quick-change system, which is exactly the sort of choice this watch needs: one strap turns up the pit-lane character, the other makes the watch easier to wear away from the rally theme.

This release works because the Averin is an unusually honest base for a rally special edition. It does not pretend to be a museum piece, and it does not soften the case to chase universal approval. It is a square, assertive chronograph with a motorsport color story and enough mechanical substance to avoid feeling like event merchandise.
The risk is obvious: 41 x 41 mm and 15.5 mm thick will not suit every wrist. But for collectors who like German watchmaking, old-rally aesthetics and chronographs that do not look like every other two-register homage, that boldness is also the selling point. At EUR 3,700 and 350 pieces, this is a niche release, but it is a niche release with a clear reason to exist.
